A star is born

The ITMA 2003 is coming and one of its leading lights, the FEHRER NL11/TWIN-SE "CARPET STAR", is already waiting in the wings. FOCUS spoke to Monika Fehrer about this latest addition to FEHRER's star-studded, technological ensemble.

FOCUS. What exactly is the "CARPET STAR "?

M.F. The NL11/TWIN-SE “CARPET STAR " is a structuring needle punching machine for the production of high-quality rib and velour products and in particular, structured goods with a surround or borders on all sides.

FOCUS. How and why was the name "CARPET STAR" chosen?

M.F. A competition was held throughout the company in order to find a suitable name and "CARPET STAR" was selected due to the machine's unique advantages.

FOCUS. Which are?

M.F. Features such as very large repeats at previously unattained speeds, the possibility to not only create differing patterns in the body of the carpet, but also within the surround or border, and an ability to provide completely new patterns, as well as simulated oriental carpets.

FOCUS. How are these capabilities achieved?

M.F. The patented "CARPET STAR" system has two independent needle zones for the patterning process. It is also characterised by a precision drive system, which facilitates high production speeds even with short repeats. A quick advance system transports the felt during the intervals between penetrations. The two needle zones are adjusted to one another electronically in accordance with the prescribed recipe and as a result, maximum pattern design flexibility is guaranteed. What is more, pattern joins and hence the quality of the carpets is guaranteed by means of a continuous grill.

FOCUS. "Stars" normally have their price. Is the "CARPET STAR" also an expensive item?

M.F. On the contrary. Investment costs are actually lower due to increased needle penetrations in a SINGLE machine. Two machines are no longer required to achieve outstanding quality. Moreover, standard NL11/SE patterns can also be produced at far higher speeds.

FOCUS. The "CARPET STAR" is set to make its debut at the ITMA 2003?

M.F. This is correct, although production "rehearsals" have been going on for some time and those that have had a sneak preview of the machine have already said that its performance is worthy of an Oscar. Therefore, I am firmly of the opinion that with the "CARPET STAR", FEHRER can steal the show in Birmingham.
